Over a late lunch I discussed with Niko his thoughts about how Communication can improve.
His top three ideas:
- People hate the huge Weekly GSSC email
- It's too long, the second people see the scroll bar is tiny they check out
- GSSC -> GS re-brand
- The average student has no idea what GSSC stands for (as an acronym) or means
- People who don't know trash GSSC emails
- There is no way to connect right now to the GSSC
- Who can answer your question right now?
- How can we involve those who wish to volunteer their time more effectively?
- Communications Committee
- Outreach to the JTS community
- Outreach to the students starting in Fall and Winter

I know this may sound outrageous, but the best way to reach out to the fall and winter class is by assigning them all a GS mentor. This of course will mean that one mentor may have a group of 10-12 newbies, but I think it's the best way to intimately reach out to every GSer walking in the door before they form other habits.
If each of us were given someone to show us the ropes around here and that person also showed us what GSSC was how to engage in it I sure participation would be 10 times higher than what is it today.

Are you familiar with the official GS mentoring program? You must request one once you are accepted and then a mentor is assigned. Would your idea work differently? Would the mentors just be responsible for cultivating some sort of relationship with their 10-12 newbies, or would this specifically be requested by an incoming student? It sounds fascinating, but how do you see this unfolding?
I've read some interesting things recently about corporations that are using "Second Life" to improve their communications. Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on "Second Life"?

Second Life has some credibility problems. I would imagine that if we want to communicate with a body of students badly enough, we should figure out how to make it happen in person.
